Confessions of a Queen B*

When they see her, they look down and away, hoping she won't notice them.

She is the Queen B of the school. 

Actually, she's the second Queen B, the first being her former best friend and current nemesis. 

Alexis Wyndham isn't the most popular girl in school; she's actually a pariah and she's the one everyone avoids for fear of being posted on her weekly blog. 

No one is safe from this Queen B. The jocks can't avoid her wrath. The cheerleaders fear her poisoned pen. The administration gets nervous about what she'll reveal. And while she'll defend the weak and victims of bullying, she's also quick to point out their mistakes, too.

Alexis knows that she's avoided like the plague, which makes her new friendship with the king of the jocks, quarterback Brett Pederson all the more confusing.

But figuring out her relationship with Brett will have to wait since someone is posting video of the cheerleaders in the locker room and Alexis has to figure out who it is before her sister becomes the next star of YouTube.

Final thoughts: Great cotton candy book! I really liked Alexis, though her constant need to be separate and apart from everyone was a little confusing. It feels like there's a little backstory missing on that issue. Brett was pretty awesome and probably too good to be true. The plot was pretty slim as it centered more on Alexis and Brett and less on what is discussed on the book jacket. My only real issue is the ending since it's not really a cliffhanger, but it definitely doesn't end. It's more like hitting pause during a movie and waiting for a chance to finish it later. Guess I'll have to wait for the sequel.

Do you blog for a living or for fun? 

My answer:

Both... kind of.  I like posting my reviews and leaving my thoughts about books, especially since I often forget them over time and now I've got a great place to go back and remind myself.  But I started this blog as an announcement page for the school library in which I used to work, and I've got it linked on the home page of my current school library, so it's also a work-related thing.

However, if is the question is more geared to the "do you make money off of it" type of thing, then the answer is "no".  I've never monetized the page, mostly because with only 55 followers and not that many views when considering how long I've had this thing up and running, I'd probably end up owing people instead of getting any cash.  ;-)

Book blogging is more than just reading. 

Who helped you set up or run your blog? Or did you do it all yourself? 

Sadly, for me, reading is all I have time to do for my blog.  Originally, I created this blog as a way to communicate with students in my school library.  Very shortly, it became a blog where I book talked.  Eventually, I added "final thoughts" and ratings.  However, I still don't have time to do cool things like author interviews or giveaways.  Maybe that's why my readership is so low after all this time.  :(

On the bright side, I read so many books that it's good to have a place I can go to to remind myself about the books I've read.

Serial Reader

Yup!  That sounds about right.  Without NetGalley, I might never try new authors, especially now that my local bookstores are all shut down and I don't have time to go out to others for serious browsing time.

What is your favorite trilogy (series)?

Ack!  So many from which to choose!

My current fave is the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones.  But there's also The Grave Witch series by Kalayna Price and the Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill.  And, of course, there's also the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.

Right now, I'm on an urban supernatural kick, and those tend to be long-running series books rather than just trilogies.  There are some really good dystopian series though, like The Hunger Games, Divergent, Across the Universe, Matched, and more.

What upcoming 2013 book are you most looking forward to reading?

My answer: anything urban supernatural lit.  I'm currently in love with the Chloe Neill Chicagoland Vamps, Darynda Jones and her Charley Davidson books AND her newest YA series including Death, Doom, and Destruction.  When Patricia Briggs' new book Frost Burned comes out, I will be downloading it to my Kindle and devouring the contents.

How long does it take you to read a book?

A good book = less than a day and then I immediately want to read another book

A mediocre book = slows down my whole cycle, often leading to me not reading for a week or more because I'm reluctant to read the so-so book and I don't like giving up on a book unless it's so horrible I can't stand it anymore (only two or three times ever).  I also hate reading more than one book at a time; I'm just not wired to go back and forth between worlds.

A bad book = these can go either way; I can slog through it slowly or speed through it in desperation to get through to the end.

No matter what, my Kindle has made my life with books so completely different and amazing.  NetGalley has been heaven sent and reading ARCs on my Kindle is so much fun!  If you haven't registered with them yet... do it!

I've been missing these because I've been slow to read new stuff recently and didn't want to have week after week of hop links and nothing new.  I HAVE been re-reading books from my teen years, but reviewing those seems wrong since I'm very biased about them.

So the question of the week...

“What is the one ARC you would love to get your hands on right now?”

Honestly, if I could get my hands on Chloe Neill's new Chicagoland book or Rachel Vincent's next Soul Screamers book, I'd be in heaven.  Waiting for them is torture!  Plus I may need to re-read them all if I have to wait much longer, which means even less time to read original new stuff.

It's been a while so it's definitely time to HOP again.  

This week's question is:

“How many books are currently in your To-Be-Read (TBR) Pile?”

 I don't really have a TBR "pile".  What I have is a number of books that I haven't read interfiled with books that I have read and may even read again.  Plus I have a "stack" of books on my Kindle just waiting to be read.  NetGalley.com is a force of "chaotic good" since it both provides me with free books AND provides me with free books.  In all though, I probably have about 30-40 books that I have never read and need to.

  "Do you read only one book at a time, or do you have several going at once?"

Personally, I really can't "read" two books at once.  I usually have one that I focus on and will occasionally have a "back-up" book around if my mood changes or if I left my main one somewhere out of reach.  The second one is usually a re-read, though, so I almost never count is as reading more than one at a time.

I'm currently reading Delirium, by Lauren Oliver, and while I'm loving the idea of it, it's hard to read another dystopian novel.  This one is good, but so many before have also been good.  Why are dystopias so draining on the soul?

Wow!  It feels like I just did this and only one book reviewed between!  Arrgg.  Of course, the fact that I've been in training sessions all-day, everyday for the past week, arriving home exhausted, and just vegging in front of the TV my have something to do with that.  Luckily, I have a few new books downloaded to my Kindle, so I'm hoping to get a little reading in soon.

"Where is your favorite place to read? Curled up on the sofa, in bed, in the garden?"

 

Personally, I'm a fan of the couch.  Mine is a recliner, but when I'm reading, I tend to not recline.  I must be curled.  Reading while sitting in a straight pose may be great for posture, but not for getting into a good book.  Maybe I just like hugging myself while lost in a book.  Hmm...

I did this once a couple of months ago, but hadn't done it again until now because I could never get enough time to hop around to the other blogs.

This week's question:

"When you read a book that you just can't get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?"

I usually try to stick it out for as long as possible.  There have been a couple of books that I've just completely given up on and others that I'd wished I had.  I hate quitting things, but sometimes it just has to be done.  I quit The Fetch because it was just annoying and I wish I'd quit Bleeding Violet because it was just all-around awful and The Red Necklace because it was a mess.

So now to hippity-hop to some other blogs...

Jennifer at Crazy for Books has a great idea for sharing ideas and thoughts about book blogging.  She's created the Book Blogger Hop.  The rules are simple and the sites are great, so if you blog about books, seriously think about signing up.  If you don't blog, well now you've got a great resource for book info!

The book I'm most itching to get my hands on is Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.  I can't wait to see how The Hunger Games series finishes out.  Second most itchy book is Linger, the sequel to Shiver.
